Hydration: You May Not Be Ill, You May Be Dehydrated

Hydration is always important, especially as summer brings warmer weather and increased sun exposure. Typically, when you start feeling the sensation of thirst, you are already on the way to dehydration. Some common symptoms of dehydration include headaches, lightheadedness, foggy mind, muscle cramps, diarrhea, and constipation.

One tip to stay hydrated is pacing your water intake to get the most out of it. Your body can absorb about ¼ cup of liquid every 15 minutes, so any more than this won’t increase your hydration. You may also need electrolytes to stay hydrated. We can go over the importance of electrolytes at your next visit.

Staying hydrated can also increase the positive benefits provided by acupuncture. Acupuncture stimulates detoxification, circulation, and relaxation throughout the body. Adequate hydration supports and enhances these processes by regulating the body’s natural stress response and optimizing tissue response. Hydrated tissues are more pliable and resilient, which promotes the flow of nutrients and oxygen to the affected areas, therefore optimizing the healing process.

Water plays numerous roles in the body. Some of the most important roles include:

  • Flushing waste out of our bodies through urine
  • Regulating our internal temperature through sweating and respiration
  • Transporting both micro and macro nutrients through the blood
  • Protecting your tissues, spinal cord, and joints
  • Helping your brain function optimally by supporting adequate electrolyte balance

Staying hydrated this Summer is not only essential for your health and functions of the body, but it also has the potential to enhance your experience with acupuncture!
