Lipoic Acid Shown to Be Toxic to Leukemia Cells

Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is integral to every cell in the body.  It is necessary for energy production, functions as antioxidant protecting cells from damage, and has a curious ability to recycle other antioxidants like glutathione, Vit C, Vit E, and others. It’s a healthy substance to have to work correctly in your body.

You naturally produce ALA and can get it from supplements and some foods. Lipoic acid has been used for decades to treat the pain and discomfort of diabetic neuropathy.  There are certain health conditions and medications that can reduce normal ALA levels.   A 2008 study showed interesting results when comparing normal lymphocytes and leukemic lymphocytes.  Lipoic acid proved to be toxic to leukemic cells and not to normal cells.  It affects the cancer cells’ ability to produce energy and supported apoptosis.

See the Oncology Reference list for additional peer-reviewed studies related to Alpha Lipoic Acid.
