Vitamin D Reduces Risk of Deadly Cancers

A randomized clinical trial of daily vitamin D supplementation for 5 years reduced the incidence of advanced (metastatic or fatal) cancer in the overall group of adults without a diagnosis of cancer at the beginning of the study.  The strongest risk reduction was seen in people with normal weight.  Persons who are overweight or obese may require higher doses to derive cancer risk reduction benefits.  Vitamin D supplementation at the studied levels is much less toxic and lower cost than many current cancer therapies.

Remember– get your serum vitamin D levels tested before starting on a vitamin D supplement to get your baseline levels.  You’re most likely deficient if you live in northern climates or are not exposed to sunlight.  In the U.S. that includes all points north of a line drawn between Los Angeles and Charleston South Carolina. Once you know your baseline level a starting dose can be established and then monitored until stable.
