Mental health is something that a lot of individuals struggle with, especially young adults. Many may dismiss such issues, causing those who are struggling to feel unheard and alone. Depression, anxiety, OCD, bipolar disorder, and eating disorders are some common mental illnesses that many people struggle with on a daily basis.
Mental illness is an extremely important issue that should not be forgotten about, as many are life-threatening and harmful. Just as one who broke a body part would seek professional care, so should those struggling with their mental health. Some believe that the severity of mental illnesses and disorders falls lower than physical illnesses, however, the two should both be as important as the other.
Many individuals who struggle will usually suffer in silence because they are afraid to be a bother or that what they are experiencing doesn’t deserve attention. However, this is not the case. It is never a burden to reach out if you need help.
Despite this, mental health is incredibly important, and if you or someone you know is struggling, do not feel as if you have to suffer in silence. There are countless hotlines and people to talk to if you’re feeling lonely.
As a fellow human that struggles with their mental health, I can personally relate and understand how difficult it can be. If you know someone who is struggling, instead of saying things like “You’re being dramatic” or “It’s all in your head,” gravitate towards more positive and understanding phrases like “I’m proud of you” and “I can’t imagine what you’re going through, but I’m always here for you.”
Seeking help will only be beneficial in the long run, and it is the first step in getting better. Whether it is you, a friend, or a family member, if you notice that they are showing warning signs of harming themselves or others, please reach out to a trusted adult or 911. Although they may tell you that they don’t want or need help, it is extremely important to do so; their life may depend on it.
