Vaping nicotine in today’s world sounds like it should be the least of anyone’s concerns, however this addictive substance is slowly yet surely becoming a nationwide issue. Teenagers are becoming addicted to vaping because it is easily accessible and seen as something ‘cool’ or ‘fun’.
Although most individuals know the side effects, many young adults will try vaping because their friends offer it to them, or they believe that addiction to nicotine is easily avoidable and exaggerated. Unfortunately, nicotine is proven to be one of the most addictive substances, and also the hardest to quit.
Vaping was created to supposedly help cigarette smokers lean off of nicotine, however people who have never had an addiction to nicotine are now picking up vaping. High school students are seemingly the most affected by this issue. Many students believe it is a good stress relief and pleasurable, but the side effects of these devices are ruining lives. According to Truth Initiative, 27.5% of high schoolers in 2019 used vaping products. So, for every four students, there would be at least 1 who has vaped.
Aside from high school, middle school students who vape have increased by 500% from before to after the COVID pandemic. From only 3% of students to nearly 16% vaping in only a few years, it shows the bigger issue of this drug and its under age victims.
There are many side effects to regularly vaping, including, headaches, sore throats, shortness of breath, nausea, and coughing. Some long term effects include lung cancer, brain damage, heart disease, and mouth/gum disease. Vape oils contain a series of chemicals and metals, which when inhaled, coat the lungs in a sticky substance causing illness and injury.
Individuals around the world have been finding themselves in the hospital after vaping for a period of time, sometimes with diseases such as Popcorn Lung and EVALI. Both diseases are from the vaping of nicotine and its additives, and can easily be prevented by saying no to vaping and smoking. The health of vapers continues to decrease with time. With the help of each other, it is important to raise awareness for the concerning health effects of vaping.
